Sharing is Caring

Apparently we are entering the “Sharing Revolution”. To be honest, I am a little scared! After finding out last week that everything that I post on facebook no longer belongs to me, I started thinking… I wonder where my pictures are now! But I think that sharing personal resources is a different story.

Dean Shareski had some interesting ideas. He said that “If indeed we believe that teaching is sharing, then if there is no sharing, there is no education”. When I think about it, in some school that I have been in, I had no idea what most of the teachers were teaching their students within the walls of their classroom.

Sharing with the best educators in the world! What a fantastic idea! I can’t even express how many great ideas I used and adapted when I was at university and in my first few years of teaching. However, my only concern is that I can spend so much time searching, and not end up finding what I am looking for! However, I guess that is the point of me sharing my resources too.

Especially being at an International School, it is so important to have perspectives from all different cultures all over the world! Just like Dan Meyer said, that if we are truly doing this for the children, why wouldn’t we want to share our best practices? I think the idea that you could write a blog post and people can instantly give you feedback is pretty cool.

This all sounds great in theory but am I ready to be vulnerable???

Fitting it all in…

Wow! What a busy time of year! Trying to fit everything in and still give 100% is so difficult! Lots of items on my to do list, and the list just keeps getting longer! I guess this is when it is important to know how to prioritize.

Well only four weeks until I go home for the Christmas break. The other day I got so busy that I completely forgot that Christmas was coming up! I feel like I am in one of the cars in the picture below…

Safe and Appropriate Use of Social Media – What Is Our Role?

In the rapidly growing media world children are being exposed to a variety of media at a young age. For this reason, it is important for the school and teachers to play a part in ensuring that each child uses media, especially the internet, safely and appropriately.

In my previous school, I was a health teacher. I decided to include internet safety as a unit focus. I was shocked at how many 10, 11 and 12 year old students are currently using facebook. Throughout the unit we looked at changing settings to private, only accepting people that you know, uploading appropriate photos, talking to strangers, entering chat rooms and keeping parents/adults informed about anything that is out of the ordinary.

In my opinion, I think that as a teacher, I have an important role in ensuring that the students in my class are safe on the internet, especially being at an IT focus school. We can teach a lot from the front of the classroom, and also by being a good role model. I think that if we lay a good foundation in Grade 2, they will have the understanding and skills to be a safe digital citizen later in their lives!
